How did Google become the internet’s censor and master manipulator, blocking access to millions of websites?

Google, Inc., isn't just the world's biggest purveyor of information; it is also the world's biggest censor.
The company maintains at least nine different blacklists that impact our lives, generally without input or authority from any outside advisory group, industry association or government agency. Google is not the only company suppressing content on the internet. Reddit has frequently been accused of banning postings on specific topics, and a recent report suggests that Facebook has been deleting conservative news stories from its newsfeed, a practice that might have a significant effect on public opinion – even on voting. Google, though, is currently the biggest bully on the block.
When Google's employees or algorithms decide to block our access to information about a news item, political candidate or business, opinions and votes can shift, reputations can be ruined and businesses can crash and burn. Because online censorship is entirely unregulated at the moment, victims have little or no recourse when they have been harmed. Eventually, authorities will almost certainly have to step in, just as they did when credit bureaus were regulated in 1970. The alternative would be to allow a large corporation to wield an especially destructive kind of power that should be exercised with great restraint and should belong only to the public: the power to shame or exclude. If Google were just another mom-and-pop shop with a sign saying "we reserve the right to refuse service to anyone," that would be one thing. But as the golden gateway to all knowledge, Google has rapidly become an essential in people's lives – nearly as essential as air or water. We don't let public utilities make arbitrary and secretive decisions about denying people services; we shouldn't let Google do so either.
Report: Internet Giants Block Faith-Based Content

According to a new report released late last week by National Religious Broadcasters, the largest Internet sites such as Google, Facebook, and Apple regularly block Christian content and refuse to accept faith-based advertising. The 43-page report concluded that “Christian ideas and other religious content face a clear and present danger of censorship on Web-based communication platforms.”
The sites reviewed included Facebook, MySpace, Google, Twitter, Comcast, AT&T, Verizon, Apple, and its iTunes Store. Out of the service providers reviewed, only Twitter did not show a distinct anti-Christian bias. According to a report on the study in The Washington Times, the NRB did not inform any of the providers they were conducting the study and based their findings on what was available to the public at the time. The study was led by Craig Parshall, NRB’s senior vice president and general counsel, who said his concern was “not just anti-Christian censorship…the current paradigm we’re seeing with censorship seems to be oriented toward people of faith and ideas that are religious based.” Parshall said in a press conference that he will pursue dialogue with each of these platforms and service providers on the subject, but is not looking to litigate at this time. “The best course of action is for new media platforms to recognize that with the enormous economic benefits that they have realized with their innovations in communications technology, also comes a great responsibility to the American people to facilitate their freedom of expression. https://churchleaders.com/pastors/pastor-articles/154586-report-internet-giants-block-faith-based-content.html How Conservatives Are Being Destroyed by Facebook, Twitter and Google Without Even Realizing It
John Hawkins Today, as you read this, my website Right Wing News is shutting down operations. It has been around since 2001, but became massive a few years ago because of Facebook.
Remember the mainstream media liberals going out of their minds because the Russians reached almost 150 million people with their $100,000 Facebook ad buy? In July of 2015, in just a week, the Right Wing News Facebook page reached 133 million people. Because conservatives were sharing content they were interested in, little ol’ Right Wing News (well, I guess nearly 3.6 million Facebook likes isn’t so little) was driving the same amount of web traffic as some of the biggest newspapers in America. Barack Obama’s Facebook page was 36 times bigger than our page; yet we had 7 times as many people talking about our content. Furthermore, YouTube’s radically liberal parent company Google is being sued by James Damore for targeting white men and conservatives. Incidentally, Damore was fired from Google after he wrote an internal memo for other employees to read (something that is common at Google) called, Google’s Ideological Echo Chamber: How bias clouds our thinking about diversity and inclusion. Don’t kid yourself because if you are conservative, “diversity” and “inclusion” don’t include you. If you want a more concrete example of that besides its heavily biased search engine which pretty clearly prefers liberal sources over conservative ones, the latest controversy with Google is that if you search for many prominent conservative websites, it has a “fact checking section” next to them while many sketchy liberal websites don’t. https://townhall.com/columnists/johnhawkins/2018/01/13/how-conservatives-are-being-destroyed-by-facebook-twitter-and-google-without-even-realizing-it-n2433962 Christian Publisher: Google Blocked Our Ads Over Jesus, Bible References The head of a Lutheran publishing house has claimed Google will no longer accept advertisements related to the organization's website "because of the faith we express." Bruce Kintz, CEO of Concordia Publishing House — an entity of the theologically conservative Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, took to his Facebook page on Monday to voice outrage after the organization had been told that the Google's online advertising service will not promote the CPH website because of certain religious items on the page. Kintz's Facebook post explains that he was told by an associate earlier in the day that "Google ads will no longer accept anything related to the cph.org domain." "They stated that the reason is because of the faith we express on our website," Kintz wrote. More specifically, a Google AdWords support representative told CPH that references to Jesus and the Bible led to the disapproval of its ads. "[A CPH staff member] was told, as an example, that things like our bible challenge on our VBS webpage would clearly need to come down before they could consider us for ads," Kintz said.
